Lesson 192 of the Commentary of al Tajrid al Sarih (The Abridged Saheeh al-Bukhari) by Shaykh Abu Yusuf Riyadh ul Haq.

025 - The Book of Zakah -Dars of al Tajrid al Sarih (The Abdriged Saheeh al-Bukhari)

Delivered on Friday 18th April 2008.

Hadeeth 729-731

The first hadeeth covered in this lesson is below:

CHAPTER 18. The examples of an almsgiver and a miser. 729. وعَنْه رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: أَنّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ: (مَثَلُ الْبَخِيلِ وَالمُنْفِقِ, كَمَثَلِ رَجُلَيْنِ, عَلَيْهِمَا جُبّتَانِ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ, مِنْ ثَدْيِهِمَا إِلَى تَرَاقِيهِمَا, فَأَمّا المُنْفِقُ: فَلاَ يُنْفِقُ إِلاّ سَبَغَتْ, أَوْ وَفَرَتْ عَلَى جِلْدِهِ, حَتّى تُخْفِيَ بَنَانَهُ, وَتَعْفُوَ أَثَرَهُ. وَأَمّا البَخِيلُ: فَلاَ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُنْفِقَ شَيْئًا إِلا لَزِقَتْ كُلّ حَلْقَةٍ مَكانَهَا, فَهُوَ يُوَسّعُهَا فَلاَ تَتّسِعُ). رواه البخاري: 1443

729. Narrated Abu Huraira رضى الله عنه : The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, The example of a miser and an almsgiver is like the example of two persons wearing iron cloaks Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم also said, The example of an almsgiver and a miser is like the example of two persons who have two iron cloaks on them from their breasts to their collar bones, and when the almsgiver gives in charity, the cloak becomes capacious till it covers his whole body to such an extent that it hides his fingertips and covers his footprints (obliterates his tracks) . And when the miser wants to spend, it (the iron cloak) sticks and (its) every ring gets stuck to its place and he tries to widen it, but it does not become wide. (2:523O.B.)

Hadeeth 722-728

722. ???? ?????? ????? ???? ?????? ?????? ????? ?????????: ???? ??????? ????? ??? ???? ???? ???? ?????, ?????? ????? ???????????, ???????? ?????????? ???????????? ???????????????: (??????? ?????????? ?????? ???? ??????? ?????????, ????????? ?????????? ???? ????????????, ???????? ????????? ???? ???????????). ???? ???????: 1429 722. Narrated Abdullâh bin ‘Umar ??? ???? ????? : Allâh’s Messenger ??? ???? ???? ???? while on the pulpit said about charity, and to abstain from asking others for some financial help, and begging others, saying: The upper hand is better than the lower hand. The upper hand is that of the giver and the lower (hand) is that of the beggar. (2:509O.B.)

SUBJECTS COVERED

HADEETH 722

Reliance on Allah.

Wealth does not equal nobility.

Not asking for charity due to one’s dignity despite being in need.

HADEETH 723

The encouragement in Islam to be vigilant and seek out those in need.

Interceding on behalf of those in need.

Is there reward for good deeds conducted before one embraces Islam?

The reward for a person who is entrusted to give out sadaqah and he is honest.

Each deed creates momentum; good leads to good. Evil needs to evil.

The ability to do a good deed may be the reward for a previous good deed.

HADEETH 728

The du’a of the Angels each morning.

Allah will replace what you give in sadaqah.

If a person seeks to do things in a halal way, Allah will soon assist him.

Mocking the servants of Allah.

Seeking enrichment through marriage.

باب: إذَا تَصَدّقَ عَلَى ابْنِهِ وَهُوَ لاَ يَشعُر

CHAPTER 10. If a person gives something in charity to his own son unknowingly.

719. عَنْ مَعْن بْن يَزِيدَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: بَايَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنَا وَأَبِي وَجَدّي, وَخَطَبَ عَلَيّ فَأَنْكَحَنِي, وَخاصَمْتُ إِلَيْهِ: كانَ أَبِي يَزِيدُ أَخْرَجَ دَنَانِيرَ يَتَصَدّقُ بِهَا, فَوَضَعَهَا عِنْدَ رَجُلٍ في المَسْجِدِ, فَجِئْتُ فَأَخَذْتُهَا, فَأَتَيْتُه بِهَا, فَقَالَ: وَاللهِ ما إِيّاكَ أَرَدْتُ, فَخَاصَمْتُهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم, فَقَالَ: (لَكَ ما نَوَيْتَ يَا يَزِيدُ, وَلَكَ ما أَخَذْتَ يَا مَعْنُ). رواه البخاري: 1422

719. Narrated Ma’n bin YazId رضى الله عنه : My grandfather, my father and I gave the Bai’a (pledge) to Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم . The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم got me engaged and then got me married. One day I went to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم with a complaint…… My father YazId had given some gold coins for charity and kept them with a man in the mosque (to give them to the poor) but I went and took them and brought them to him (my father). My father said, By Allâh! I did not intend to give them to you. I took (the case) to Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم . On that Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said, O YazId! You will be rewarded for what you intended. O Ma’n! Whatever you have taken is yours.

SUBJECTS COVERED

HADEETH  719

Three generations of one family embracing Islam.

Allah’s favours upon Ma’n bin Yazid  رضى الله عنه.

The validity of zakah if it is distributed to one’s son.

Taking one’s father to court.

Divorcing one’s wife at the request of one’s father.

HADEETH  720

All involved in the giving of zakah are rewarded.

Can a woman give in charity from her husband’s wealth?

Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم would always give his own sadaqah  and prepare water for wudhu himself

HADEETH  721

The upper hand is better than the lower hand.

Only giving that much in charity that you do not become dependent yourself

The permissibility of giving in charity or going on Hajj and Umrah whilst in debt.

Do not be too stingy or too generous.

Whoever seeks abstention, Allah will make him abstemious.

Hadeeth 715-718

The first hadeeth covered in this lesson is below:

باب: اتّقُوا النّارَ وَلَو بِشقّ تَمْرَةٍ وَالْقَلِيلِ مِنَ الصّدَقَة

CHAPTER 6. Protect yourself from Hellfire even with a half date, or with a little object of charity.

715. عَنْ عائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: دَخَلَتِ امْرَأَةٌ مَعَهَا ابْنَتَانِ لَهَا تَسْأَلُ, فَلَمْ تَجِدْ عِنْدِي شَيْئًا غَيْرَ تَمْرَةٍ, فَأَعْطَيْتُهَا إِيّاهَا, فَقَسَمَتْهَا بَيْنَ ابْنَتَيْهَا, وَلَمْ تَأْكُلْ مِنْهَا, ثُمّ قَامَتْ فَخَرَجَتْ, فَدَخَلَ النّبِيّ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَلَيْنَا فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ, فَقَالَ النّبِيّ صلى الله عليه وسلم: (مَنِ ابْتُلِيَ مِنْ هذِهِ الْبَنَاتِ بِشَيْءٍ كُنّ لَهُ سِتْرًا مِنَ النّارِ). رواه البخاري: 1418

715. Narrated A’isha رضى الله عنها : A lady along with her two daughters came to me asking (for some alms), but she found nothing with me except one date which I gave to her and she divided it between her two daughters, and did not eat anything herself, and then she got up and went away. Then the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم came and I informed him about this story. He said, Whoever is put to trial by these daughters and he treats them generously (with benevolence) then these daughters will act as a shield for him from Hellfire. (2:499O.B.)

Only three dates in the house of A’ishah رضى الله عنها .

Motherly compassion.

Are daughters a burden?

The birth of a baby girl is not welcomed in some societies.

The position of daughters in the Days of Ignorance.

Thinking of daughters as a stigma.

The Muslim male should provide, care for and protect his womenfolk.

HADEETH  716

Giving in charity when you have the greatest desire for wealth.

Better to spend earlier rather than later.

HADEETH  717

The meaning of ‘the wife with the longest arm.’

Zainab bint Jash  رضى الله عنها was the most generous of the Noble Mothers in giving in charity.

-  A marriage in the heavens.

-  She was the refuge of the orphans and widows.

-  She would earn just to give in charity.

-  An example of her generosity.

HADEETH  718

All praise belongs to Allah.

The effects of sincere deeds.

What happens if you give zakah to a person that is not allowed to receive it?  Will you need to pay zakah again?

Who is ineligible for receiving zakah?
